Credential Maintenance
Requirements for Maintenance of
Certification (Currently Certified)

Meet Professional Education requirements
in effect at the time of application for renewal and submit proof of
active, unrestricted U.S. license/registration, or official transcript
of advanced degree if not previously submitted.

Submit a completed current Application,
along with applicable fee, by the application deadline date.

Submit proof that CDE status is current
(copy of CDE certificate or wallet card or NCBDE-issued letter of
verification).

Take and pass the CDE Examination prior to
the current certification expiration date.*

The individual who fails to renew her CDE
credential prior to its expiration date may not use the CDE designation
as a credential following her name, or otherwise as a certification
mark, nor may she represent herself in any way as a Certified Diabetes
Educator.
Renewal of Certification after Credential
Expiration
I. Individuals whose certification was not
renewed prior to the expiration date may apply for the spring
examination in the year immediately following expiration of the
credential without having to meet initial eligibility requirements. This
application option is available ONLY for the spring examination in the
year immediately following the credential expiration. Certification is
NOT extended between the time of credential expiration and passing the
spring examination.
Individuals who qualify to apply under this
provision must:

Submit copy of the most recent CDE
certificate or NCBDE-issued letter verifying the date the credential
lapsed.
II. Previously certified individuals whose
credentials have lapsed and who do not qualify under the preceding
provision must meet the eligibility
requirements for initial certification.
